Engine Control Unit (ECU), also known as power-train control module (PCM), or engine control module (ECM) are responsable for the function of fuel mixtures, ignition timing and other parameters of a modern engine. Should this develop a fault, usually displayed by lights on the dashboard your vehicle maybe drivable or fail to start
