Here at Paul Harrison Cars, we operate a one-lane MOT testing station covering Class 4 & ATL vehicles, making it one of the easiest and most efficient testing stations for all your MOT needs.

1. About the MOT

An MOT test checks important components on your vehicle to ensure they meet the legal safety and environmental standards.

Please note that an MOT is not the same as a vehicle service and does not assess the general mechanical condition of your car.

The MOT test does not cover the condition of your:

  • Engine
  • Clutch
  • Gearbox

2. Car Parts Tested During the MOT

Below is an overview of the main areas inspected during your MOT test.

2.1 Body, Structure & General Items

  • Checked for corrosion or damage in specific areas
  • Ensured to be free from sharp edges that could cause injury

2.2 Towbars

  • Security, condition, and any inappropriate repairs or modifications
  • 13-pin electrical socket operation
  • Speedometer functionality
  • Engine mountings security

2.3 Fuel System

  • No leaks
  • Pipes and hoses are secure and in good condition
  • Fuel cap fastens and seals securely
  • (Please ensure your key is available as the cap will need to be opened.)

2.4 Exhaust Emissions

  • Inspected according to the vehicle’s age and fuel type to ensure it meets emissions standards.
  • For diesel vehicles:
  • The tester may refuse to test if the smoke test could damage the engine. To reduce the chance of failure or damage:
  • Maintain your vehicle regularly
  • Replace the camshaft drive belt at recommended intervals
  • Arrive with a warm engine
  • Avoid tampering with governor settings

2.5 Exhaust System

  • Secure, complete, and leak-free
  • Catalyst present (if fitted as standard)
  • Not excessively noisy

2.6 Seatbelts

  • Correct type and securely fitted
  • Good condition and working order
  • Dashboard warning lights (MILs) checked for: Airbags, Seatbelt pretensioners, Seatbelt load limiters

2.7 Seats

  • Driver’s seat adjustable
  • All seats securely fitted and lock upright

2.8 Doors

  • Latches secure when closed
  • Front doors open from inside and outside
  • Rear doors open from outside
  • Hinges and catches secure and in good condition

2.9 Mirrors & Indirect Vision

  • Correct number and in good condition
  • Securely fitted
  • 2.10 Load Security
  • Boot or tailgate closes properly

2.11 Brakes

  • Checked for condition, operation, and performance
  • ABS and ESC systems inspected
  • Warning lights checked for brake system issues

2.12 Tyres & Wheels

  • Condition, security, size, and tread depth checked
  • TPMS warning light checked (for vehicles from 2012 onwards)

2.13 Registration Plates

  • Securely attached
  • Correct format, colour, and spacing

2.14 Lights

  • Checked for condition, operation, alignment, and security
  • Includes LED, HID, and headlamp systems

2.15 Bonnet

  • Closes securely

2.16 Wipers & Washers

  • Operate correctly to provide a clear view of the road

2.17 Windscreen

  • Checked for condition and visibility

2.18 Horn

  • Works correctly and is suitable for the vehicle

2.19 Steering & Suspension

  • Condition and correct operation checked
  • Power steering fluid levels and components inspected
  • Steering lock mechanism tested
  • Relevant warning lights (MILs) checked

2.20 Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

  • Single VIN must be visible (for vehicles first used after 1 August 1980)

2.21 Electrical

  • Visible wiring and battery inspected
